How to Revise the Qur'an and Retain Your Hifz

Revision is not a second hobby beside Hifz. It is Hifz. Fluency comes from returning often enough that an ayah is easy to start, not from stacking new pages.

Return before the ayah feels fragile

If you wait until a page is “gone”, the repair costs more than a short daily return. Keep recent pages in a near cycle and older pages in a wider cycle. Why forgetting happens is usually this gap, not a weak memory.

Revise aloud, then from memory

Looking while reciting is reading. Cover the page, start the ayah, and only look when you are stuck. Mark the stumble and come back the same day if you can. Repetition and spaced return turns that mark into a schedule instead of guilt.

Similar ayahs need comparison

When two lines steal from each other, revise them as a pair. Mutashabihat is revision work, not a special talent.

Give revision the larger share of time

New memorisation feels productive. Retention is quieter. As your Hifz grows, new work should shrink so return can grow. See balancing new Hifz with revision.

Keep a teacher in the loop

A weekly recitation to someone who knows the mushaf catches what self-testing misses. Mutqin can hold the range; the teacher still hears tajweed and mix-ups between lookalike ayahs.
