How to revise the Quran and retain your Hifz

Forgetting is normal when there is no return. Retaining Hifz is not a second hobby; it is the same ayahs, opened again before they fade. Keep new lesson if your teacher assigned it — but give yesterday’s range a short slot first.

Why memorised ayahs slip

A range you recited well once still needs another look while the sound is close, then later looks when it is no longer daily. If every sitting is only new lesson, the older pages have no owner. That is not a moral failure; it is a missing return.

Three buckets that keep a week honest

You do not need a complex calendar to start. You need three buckets to exist in the same week: what you took recently, a slightly older completed set, and any ayahs a check marked weak.

A simple weekly rhythm

Example only — fit it to your class: most days, open yesterday (or this week’s new lesson) before adding anything new. Two or three times a week, open an older completed set for a short murajaah pass. Whenever a check marks weak ayahs, those jump the queue on a short day. Your teacher may set different portions; keep the idea of recent + older + weak.

Weak ayahs first when time is short

If you only have a few minutes, open the weak ayahs from the last check instead of racing a full Juz. A quiet recall quiz or AI Recite can surface those spots after you have already practised the range. Mutqin can list weak ayahs after a check so the next sitting has a starting point. For a quick map of how far you have kept, try the free Hifz progress calculator.

New lesson and revision in the same plan

Retention fails when the plan is only “new.” Leave a return slot when you size the week — the memorization plan guide and the beginners plan both treat return as part of the plan, not an afterthought.

Using Mutqin for returns

Saved completed sessions, dashboard murajaah, and “revision due” in the workspace are prompts for the next open. Your teacher may still set the official review. See Quran revision in Mutqin for what the product shows, and Hifz progress when you want the practised ayahs in one place.

Mutqin supports practice between lessons. It does not replace a teacher, and it does not mark a khatm complete for you.
